June is a very good month to visit Costa Rica. Although it’s the second month of Costa Rica’s seven-month rainy season, the rainy season starts soft and gradually builds over time. In June most days start off clear and sunny. Any rain that falls generally does so in the late afternoon. June is also a great month for reduced crowds, increased hotel availability and low season discounts.
Costa Rica Weather in June
June falls in Costa Rica’s low season, which makes it a great time to visit some of the country’s most popular destinations (Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, Arenal Volcano) that are packed in the high season. And because June is still the beginning of the rainy season, you’ll likely enjoy plenty of sunny days. But remember: the amount of sunshine depends on where you visit. Weather in Costa Rica is highly variable by region. (See rainfall map below.)
In Northwest Costa Rica – home to tropical dry forest – the start of the rainy season brings welcome change. By the end of the dry season the region’s trees have dropped their leaves, and dirt roads are very dusty. June’s light afternoon rains bring back the leaves, once again giving northwest Costa Rica and the Nicoya Peninsula a lush, tropical feel.
The Central Pacific (Manuel Antonio, Uvita) gets more rain than northwest Costa Rica, which is why it stays green year-round. June means sunny mornings with fairly consistent afternoon rain. That said, you can sometimes get lucky and experience a string of sunny days.
The South Pacific (Drake Bay, Corcovado) is one of the rainiest regions in Costa Rica. June means regular, heavy rain in the afternoon. But mornings are generally sunny. Wake up early and there’s still plenty to experience. When it rains in the afternoon you can relax at your hotel, taking in some of the most lush, beautiful scenery on the planet with a delicious cup of Costa Rican coffee.
Sunny mornings and heavy afternoon rains are also common in the mountains and along the Caribbean Coast.
