This remote mountain valley is the best place in Costa Rica to see quetzals, one of the world’s most beautiful birds. But even if you’re not a birdwatcher, San Gerardo de Dota is a great destination. The surrounding mountains are protected as Los Quetzales National Park, and despite a sprinkling of tourists not much has changed in decades. If you’re looking to experience the beauty of the cloud forest, but don’t want to deal with the crowds at Monteverde, San Gerardo de Dota is a great alternative.
