Estes Park is the largest and most popular town near Rocky Mountain National Park. Estes (pronounced “Estiss” by locals) lies just east of Rocky Mountain National Park’s two most popular entrances. The physical setting—a lush mountain valley perched 7,600 feet above sea level, surrounded by towering peaks—is worthy of its own national park, and Estes Park’s historic downtown is filled with shops and restaurants. The town is home to roughly 6,500 year-round residents, but it feels much larger in summer, when millions of visitors pass through. Because there’s no lodging in Rocky Mountain National Park, most visitors spend the night in Estes Park.
