A baby humpback whale puts on a show just offshore Acadia National Park. The cold, nutrient-rich water in the Gulf of Maine attracts hundreds of migrating humpback whales each summer. After gorging on seafood and fattening up, they head to the Caribbean for the winter to mate and give birth. The following summer, mothers guide babies north to ancestral feeding grounds. The boat in this photo belongs to Allied Whale (@alliedwhale), a marine mammal laboratory at the College of the Atlantic (@collegeoftheatlantic) in Bar Harbor. Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) on Bunker Ledge, just offshore Acadia National Park. In the late 1800s Maine fishermen placed a bounty on seals, and their population plummeted. Since 1972, when the U.S. banned hunting marine mammals, seal populations have slowly recovered. Today these pinnipeds live the good life, growing fat and happy on offshore islands with million-dollar views of Acadia. Perseid meteor over The Bubbles in Acadia National Park. The show may have peaked early Thurs morning but Friday didn't disappoint 💫 Each August Earth passes through the trail of comet Swift-Tuttle. Tiny particles in the trail blast through our atmosphere at speeds topping 140,000 mph, leaving behind glowing streaks of light called meteors. #perseids #Acadia #AcadiaNationalPark #MDI #Maine
