The tiny town of Trenton is Mount Desert Island’s connection to the mainland. A small bridge connects the town to the island, so if you’re driving to MDI you’ll pass through Trenton en route. Trenton is also home to the small Bar Harbor Airport. The airport is serviced by daily flights from Boston in season, and on long weekends it’s filled with the private jets of wealthy summer residents and their guests.
Because Trenton isn’t physically located on Mount Desert Island, it’s often overlooked as a place to stay. But if you’re looking to save money, it offers some of the best values near Acadia National Park. And it’s also home to some of the most affordable lobster shacks anywhere near MDI. As long as you don’t mind the drive (15 minutes to Acadia National Park’s main visitor center, 20 minutes to downtown Bar Harbor) Trenton is a bargain-hunters paradise.
