Southwest Harbor is the largest town on the western “quiet” side of Mount Desert Island. Centered around a beautiful working harbor, it’s a delightful mix of the island’s three common human species: modest fishermen (mostly found in Bass Harbor), rich summer folk (mostly huddled together in Northeast and Seal Harbor), and vacationing tourists (drawn to Bar Harbor like moths to a flame). As such, you won’t be hit over the head with an abundance of tourist options in Southwest Harbor, but that’s exactly why people like it.
