Perhaps the best way to describe Bass Harbor is to describe what it’s not. Located near the southwestern tip of Mount Desert Island, Bass Harbor is about as far away from Bar Harbor—both physically and metaphorically—as possible. There are no cruise ships, T-shirt shops, or tourist swarms here. Instead, Bass Harbor remains a traditional Downeast fishing village with a lobster boat-filled harbor surrounded by old wooden piers. Pickup trucks vastly outnumber SUVs, and local lawns are piled high with lobster traps and colorful buoys. On an inherently touristy island, Bass Harbor can be a breath of fresh air.
