Introduction to Bass Harbor
Adapted from Acadia National Park: The Complete Guide
The best way to describe Bass Harbor is to describe what it’s not.
Located near the southwestern tip of Mount Desert Island, Bass Harbor is about as far away from Bar Harbor—both physically and metaphorically—as possible.
There are no cruise ships, T-shirt shops, or tourist swarms here. Instead, Bass Harbor remains a traditional Downeast fishing village with a lobster boat-filled harbor surrounded by old wooden piers. Pickup trucks vastly outnumber SUVs. Local lawns are piled high with lobster traps and buoys.
On a touristy island, Bass Harbor is a breath of fresh coastal Maine air.
